STAFF REPORTER FINALLY meeting strong local demand, the Balearic government has approved almost 6.5 million euros for a new secondary school in Sineu. Currently in use, Sa Quintana college officially has places for 325 pupils. But population pressure has recently meant that portakabins have been erected as temporary classrooms in the school grounds.

The new structure approved by the regional ministry for Education will replace the old and have room for 450 pupils. After signing an agreement with the ministry, the town council in Sineu will then put the project out to public tender and finally award the contract.

The move to rebuild the school comes after owners of property living in the area agreed to cede the ground which was needed for the redevelopment of the school, instead of receiving compensation so that constructors could move in to build 57 homes.
