THE City Council is investing around 386'000 euros in making some of the suburbs of Palma more user-friendly and accessible to pedestrians.
Hallmarked for the project are the neighbourhoods of Es Forti, Son Cotoner and Es Camp d'en Serralta in the area of the city known as the Ponent. According to City Hall, accessibility is a priority for their present term of office with projects already up and running in Jaime III in central Palma where junctions of side streets are being installed with raised pedestrian crossings that are suitable for wheelchair users, and improvements to drainage is being undertaken. Included in the wider programme of accessibilityare upgrading of street lighting which may not currently conform to standard; safe and efficient traffic light systems geared to pedestrian as well as vehicle use; and pavement drainage.
