STAFF REPORTER THE bankruptcy earlier this year of Scottish tour operator Globespan has grounded more than just a fleet of aircraft - three tourist hotels in Pollensa won't be able to open their doors this season as they are owned by Globespan's branch in Spain, Creixent.

The three-star Hotel Sis Pins in the Port of Pollensa, built in 1953, was acquired through Creixent in 2000 as were the Xingala hotel and the Alexia apartments in the same resort. The Sis Pins had made a name for itself over the years as a favourite spot for famous faces. The collapse has prompted 25 hostelry workers who have been employed during the high season each year at the three establishments to claim compensation for redundancy.

The workers were at an arbitration tribunal yesterday seeking an agreement acceptable to all parties concerned. Creixent says it is still possible to open on 1st May but won't commit to giving the workers a contract with fixed dates to which they had been accustomed in previous years. Creixent has until 28th April to come up with a viable alternative.
