STAFF REPORTER THE success of recent weekend archaeological walks has prompted the Council of Majorca's Heritage department to extend the project to seven new municipalities, Director Gabriel Cerdà said yesterday.

On Monday, Cerdà will be meeting with the local Mayors of the earmarked areas to explain the scheme to them.
Until now, Alcudia, Manacor, Felanitx, Calvia, Montuïri, Pollensa and Sant Llorenç have been the municipalities of Majorca which have signed up to the programme to give their individual archaeological history a higher profile.

In the future, additions to the “routes through the past” will be: Arta where there will guided tours on Saturday and Sunday to the ancient Talayotic village of ses Païses and to the monastery and hermitage of Bellpuig; Ses Salines, to the historic ruins at Antigons; Santa Margalida where walkers can visit the Son Real necropolis; Llucmajor which embraces the pre-Christian village of Capocorb Vell; Costitx within whose boundaries lies the Son Corró sanctuary; Llubi which houses the Talayotic settlement of Es Racons; and Capdepera which boasts the monolithic Claper des Geganst and the Naveta de l'Algel burial chamber.

Once the municipalities have agreed to being included in the archaeological heritage programme, the Council of Majorca will set out a timetable for setting up and marketing the walks to the ancient sites.
