Palma.—The Port of Palma will now be able to handle some of the biggest cruise ships in the world after a major quay expansion was completed.
The Port of Palma has spent 38 million euros on constructing the enormous quay which is 382 metres long and 30 metres wide.
It will be used for the first time today when the giant Costa Deliziosa docks in Palma. This enormous vessel is 292 metres along and has 3'000 passengers aboard.

Construction work on the quary started in 2011 and was completed this week. It was built following talks with the major cruise line companies, who see Palma as one of their principal ports in the western Mediterranean.

The Port Authorities are trying to encourage as many cruise ships as possible to visit the Port of Palma as it has become a major source of revenue for the local economy.

The Balearic government has also given its blessing to the new quay as it considers the cruise ship market as vital to the Balearic tourist industry.
Already this week Palma has been visited by almost a dozen cruise ships of all sizes.
