STAFF REPORTER THE Balearic Islands was the region of the country which most increased its glass recyling in 2009, 22.4 percent more (5'268 tonnes) than in 2008, “Ecovidrio”, a non-profit making glass treatment association said yesterday. “Ecovidrio” confirmed that people living in the Balearics are the most “environmentally-aware” about glass recycling in Spain with an annual average figure of 26.3 kilogrammes per head of population, well above the national average of 15.2 kilos per inhabitant.

The Balearics are apparently followed closely in their care for the environment by the Basque Country and the region of Navarre, both of which recycle 25.4 kilos per inhabitant per year. Ecovidrio said that last year, 191 new containers for glass waste material were set up on the Islands, meaning that now there is one for every 252 residents.

Almost all people living in the Balearics now have a container for waste glass near their homes. However, the Islands are outshone by Castilla y Leon, where there is a container for every 199 inhabitants.

At a national level, there were 712'662 tonnes of glass recycled last year in Spain.
