STAFF REPORTER WITH European Parliamentary elections due to take place on 7th June this year, local councils around the Balearic Islands will be open 20th to 27th April for those who are not yet registered to vote.

The National Institute of Statistics reported yesterday that 728'433 people in the Islands are eligible for voting - 701'103 are Spanish nationals living in the region, 11'825 are nationals living overseas and a further 15'505 are residents who come from other European member states. Across Spain where a total of 35.5 million people are potential electors, the Balearics is the region of the country with the third highest number of foreign voters, following Alicante in first place (52'696) and Barcelona (27'026). Other nationalities living in Spain with potentially high numbers of voters in June's elections are the British (76'280), Romanians (48'613), Germans (34'009) and Italians (30'329). Spanish national voters overseas can consult their electoral status between 20 and 27 April at the relevant consulate in their country of residence. All voters in the Balearics of all nationalities can check their eligibility to vote at the local council of the municipality where their address is registered. Voting forms were sent out last year so many will already have completed and returned the forms which confirm the right to vote on 7th June. Information would simultaneously have been given on where the individual must cast their vote. On the web page of the National Institute of Statistics (www.ine.es) there is information on the voting census, on how to vote by post, when it must be done by, bylaws governing the elections and a survey of numbers already signed up to the ballot box.
