THE Domestic Violence Court has approved the fitting of five bracelets which detect when an agressor is nearby.
This was revealed yesterday by Rosa Puig, the Balearic Minister for the President's Office.
She highlighted the “good results” from the application of this measure as it “confers greater safety on the victims of domestic violence”.
Puig was speaking at the signing of an agreement against domestic violence with the Caixa de Colonya Pollensa and the Fundacion Balear, and said that the five prototypes which are in use at the moment are working “perfectly” and there have been no technical problems.

At the same time she pointed out that the reports issued by the follow up commission, which is charged with the evaluation of the results of this experiment, say that the women who are using this system have “recovered their confidence” as the bracelets represent an “autodefence system” for them. The bracelets give them prior warning of the “danger” of suffering possible violence from their agressor.

The “anti agression” bracelets came about as a provisional measure to detect when a person subject to a restraining order is nearby, and its introduction, said the Minister, is subject to a court decision which “decides if it is appropriate or not to impose this measure” which started to be applied on the islands in November 2006.

Under the agreement signed yesterday, the Colonya Caixa Pollensa will provide 30'000 euros for programmes designed to fight domestic violence, its director, Jaume Amengual, said yesterday.

The Balearic Foundation against Domestic Violence was founded in November 2004.
