STAFF REPORTER WITH a government campaign soon to be launched to help people fill in their 2009 tax returns as quickly and easily as possible, it is expected that the Inland Revenue will make concessions to people in the Balearics who have become vulnerable as a result of the economic crisis.

The tax return service, presented yesterday in Palma by regional Finance Minister Carles Manera and Inland Revenue director Maria Antonia Truyols, anticipates helping some 70'000 contributors over the two months it will be in operation at 71 points around the Balearic Islands. Manera said that this will be the first tax return completion which includes the new legal measures introduced last summer by the regional government to confront the economic crisis. At present, this particular tax relief will only benefit citizens of the Balearic Islands. Those targeted for extra help are the handicapped, people under 36-years-old and particularly large families.

There will be a 15 percent increase on property rental relief for the under 36 group up to a maximum of 300 euros a month. For people in the same age group and those with large families wanting to buy a property to live in, or to reform their main place of residence, there will be between a 6.5 percent and 50 percent deduction of property tax, which will rise to 75 percent in the case of subsidised housing. Other tax benefits maintained this year will be on the purchase of text books for studies, and for the adoption of children.

Truyols confirmed that the tax return service - accessed through a pre-booked appointment - will begin on Thursday, 23rd April so that those wanting to finalise their Inland Revenue declarations in this way can do so as of 7th May. Truyols said that the service has been running for 12 consecutive years and has resulted in the Balearic Islands being the region of the country where most tax returns are completed using this method.

The largest number of help points for tax declaration purposes can be found at Parc de sa Riera in Palma where 2'000 metres of office space will be given over to answering tax questions from the public from 7th May to 30th June. Advance appointments can be made from tomorrow until 27th June by calling 900-700012 from Monday to Friday between 9am and 7pm or on Saturday from 10am to 2pm. An alternative is to go to the web site www.atib.es.

Truyols said that new features this year include the chance to secure an “Express appointment,” a free telephone and internet service which gives access to the advice bureau in Parc de Sa Riera; and a text messaging service to remind those who have made an appointment of the date and time.
