Gold Medal for Gabriel Escarrer

Newsdesk THE Balearic Cabinet yesterday agreed to give the region's Gold Medal to Gabriel Escarrer Julia, founder of the Sol Melia Group, as public recognition of his professional achievements. The spokesperson for the Balearic Government, Joan Flaquer, was speaking at a press conference after the Cabinet meeting, where it was also said that this would extol the virtues of this man “before the whole world” for his contribution to the cultural, social and political progress of the islands. In this respect, Flaquer said that Escarrer, born in Porreres in 1935, in the 1950s started his “great” entrepreneurial career with the rental of the hotel “Altair” in Son Armadans, and the creation of the “Hoteles Mallorquinas SA” chain, the forerunner of what was later the “Hoteles Sol” chain (1976). In the 1970s he expanded his business on the islands and in the 80s started his national and international expansion.
