THE administration board of the Majorcan railway company, SFM, has awarded the contract for the underground which will link the Plaza España with the University campus. The contract is worth 114.9 million euros, and work has been divided into three stages, each awarded to a separate company.
The underground will be 7'242 metres long with six stations.
The first stage, from Son Oliva to Via Asima, with a station on the Bunyola road, will take 16 months to complete at a cost of 35.4 million euros. This part of the contract went to Dragados, TECSA Empresa Constructora and Matias Arrom Bibiloni. The second stage, with a budget of 46.3 million euros, has three stations in Asima, Son Castello and Cami dels Reis, and will be built by Sacyr SAU, Melchor Mascaro and CAVOSA. The contract is for 46.3 million euros and the time limit 17 months. The last stretch, from Via Asima to the University, with stations at Son Sardina and the campus, will be built by Aldesa Construcciones and MAN. Work will take 16.5 months and the contract is worth 33.2 million euros. The project is described as an historical event for public transport in the Balearics.
The trains will complete their run in 12 minutes, according to Balearic leader Jaume Matas who said yesterday that the line may be expanded in the future.
