THE number of foreigners paying Social Security contributions on the Balearic Islands in June 2007 was 95'995, which was an increase of 10 percent in comparison with the same month last year.

Castilla and Leon was the autonomous region which during the last 12 months recorded the greatest increase in foreigners paying Social Security contributions, with 23.34 percent, while Murcia was the only region where there was a decrease (0.57 percent less).

According to figures published yesterday by the Spanish Ministry for Work and Social Affairs, the number of foreigners paying Social Security contributions in June was more than two million, which is 7.89 percent more than in the same month last year.

After Castilla and Leon, the greatest increases in foreign contributors were in Aragon (19.68 percent), Castilla La Mancha (18.6 percent), Cantabria (18.43 percent), and Galicia (18.41 percent). In additon to the above mentioned decrease in Murcia, the number of foreign contributors also fell in the autonomous town of Melilla (2.4 percent less).

Lesser increases were found in the Canaries (4.02 percent), Andalucia (5.2 percent) and Madrid with 5.67 percent.
With regard to the total number of foreign contributors, Catalonia is the region with the greatest number (462'742), ahead of Madrid with 435'565, and Valencia with 243'255. Extremadura, Cantabria and Asturias, however, recorded the least number of foreign contributors, with 11'629, 13'089 and 14'118 respectively.

By economic sectors, there were most people paying into the General Fund in Catalonia (382'974) and least in Extremadura (5'694). With regard to the number of self employed contributors, the greatest number were again in Catalonia with 37'711, while Cantabria had the least with 1'305.

With regard to agricultural sector workers, there were more foreign contributors in Andalucia (42'805), followed by Murcia (36'373) and Valencia (21'867). The situation was very different in Cantabria which had just 221 and Asturias with 314.

The maritime and mineral sector had more contributors in June in Galicia (1'405).
Lastly, there were most foreign contributors related to home working in Madrid (51'375) and least in Extremadura (934).
