MORE than 50 period boats from 15 countries are taking part in the 21st Admiral-Count of Barcelona regatta which started yesterday and will continue until Sunday. The boats can be seen moored along the Paseo Maritimo in the Marina Port de Mallorca area.
The Palma city council will give a welcoming cocktail party at Bellver Castle today.
There will be four different races, and on Sunday at noon there will be a parade of all the ships in the bay.
The presentation of prizes will take place on Sunday night.
The boats are divided into three categories: period ships, launched before December 31, 1949; classical ships, launched between January 1 1950 and December 31 1974, and spirit of tradition, which is the historical ships. Replicas are allowed providing they have been built in keeping with the original plans and using the same techniques and materials as the original.
The ships taking part include the Isla Ebusitana, built in Palma in 1856, which will be taking part in all four races.
The regatta village has been set up opposite the Auditorium, and will offer Balearic gastronomy.
