Felanitx.—The beach in Cala Marcal has been reopened after the emergency services successfully managed to clear the beach of residual oil and fuel, that last Saturday led to the evacuation of the beach.

Juan Ramon Vidal, from the beach management department at the local council, said he hoped this was an isolated case. “It's good to see that normal service has resumed and we hope this incident with the residual waste was nothing but an isolated situation.” Yesterday morning, Cala Marcal visitors said the beach looked like it was back to normal and that all services provided in the area were back in business.

The spillage in the area was first noticed by the lifeguards on duty on Saturday afternoon who then proceeded to warn and evacuate all those who were using the beach that afternoon. The lifeguards said that the oil and fuel spillage spread over an area of 200 square metres.

The emergency services took over from there and finally managed to clear all residual waste from the water on Sunday.
The incident could have been much worse if not for the quick reaction from the waste removal team, since in the space of a few hours the spillage had drifted from Cala Marcal to Can Picafort and the beaches of Sant Pere and Sant Joan de Alcúdia.

Authorities and the investigation team said that the cause of this incident could be related to another spillage accident that occured in S'Arenalet d' Aubarca last week, on Wednesday.

The repercussions of this accident for the local environment and fauna are yet to be determined.
