THE Port of Ciutadella (Minorca) was reopened yesterday afternoon, after being closed for one and a half days following fears of another rissaga or meteotsunami, in which the level of water suddenly increases. The port has been closed since Thursday morning, and had not been expected to open until midnight. However, weather conditions improved.
Ferries had to be cancelled or rerouted to the port of Mahon.
More than 2'200 passengers were affected by the changes and the delays.
Passengers scheduled to leave from Ciutadella yesterday morning were due to be bused to Mahon, where they were due to board ferries last night. The southwest winds also damaged the floating docks in the port, in Cala en Busquets. A port spokesman said that under existing weather conditions the port would not normally have been closed, but extra precautionary measures have been introduced since the rissaga which struck last June.
