THE carefree holiday of a group of people from Madrid staying at a property in Andratx was brought to an abrupt end after a 40-year-old Romanian domestic worker, Veronica C. drowned in the swimming pool on Sunday night.
The tragedy unfolded in a luxury chalet in calle Aldea Blanca in the Port of Andratx, a 400 square-metre property built on three levels on a 3'000 square-metre plot of land. Set back from the seafront, the chalet has views over the whole bay. Able to accommodate family groups of up to ten people, the holiday home is rented out on the internet to family gruops of up to 10 people. It has all manner of conveniences and a number of terraces, one of which housed the 15 x 5 metre swimming pool.
The Guardia Civil began an investigation to clarify what had happened although everything pointed to the death having been the result of a tragic accident. It seemed that the Romanian woman had gone bathing at midnight to refresh herself. She had not known how to swim but had got into the pool in the shallow end so she was able to stand up freely. However, on moving forward, the woman is believed to have encountered an underwater step which would have taken her completely out of her depth and to her eventual drowning.
