BALEARIC citizens deposited almost 7'100 tonnes of glass in recycling containers during the first six months of this year.
This means that each person recycled an average of 7.2 kilogrammes of glass, one more kilogramme than the national average, according to sources from Ecovidrio. The Balearics is the sixth autonomous region with the highest recycling figure in kilogrammes per inhabitant, after the Basque region, Navarra, La Rioja, Catalonia and Cantabria. In addition to this, according to the same sources, the islands have a very good ratio of recycling containers per inhabitant, as 4'005 green igloos for glass have been distributed around the islands, 140 of them being installed during the first six months of this year. With regard to the national figures, the Ecovidrio sources said that in the first six months of 2006, 266'697'266 kilos of glass had been recycled, some 11 percent more than during the same period last year.
