THE Playa de Palma beach has been cleaned up following complaints by neighbours, Catalina Terrassa said yesterday.
Terrassa, deputy mayor in charge of the environment and president of Emaya, the water board, said that on Wednesday many people had complained about the state of the beach between Balnearios 9 and 12. The complaints said that there was a lot of rubbish and also discarded hypodermic needles and Terrassa explained that most of this had been caused by the heavy rains over the weekend. The drains had been unable to cope, and rubbish had been carried to some points of the coast.
However, the firm which is in charge of the sunbed concession had cleaned up the beach by Wednesday night, on the instructions of Emaya.
Terrassa added that the beach is cleaned up every night but because of the exceptional circumstances extra staff were drafted in.
Francesc Montalvá, Emaya's director for the environment, confirmed that the beach was back to normal.
