STAFF REPORTER WILDLIFE monitors working on the Planicia country estate in the Tramuntana mountain area of Banyalbufar confirmed yesterday that night action cameras have revealed the presence of a racoon, potentially a threat to the natural balance of wildlife in the area.

The racoon is the latest species of mammal to be discovered in the region following the identification of a coati some months ago. The proliferation of these two creatures could affect the natural ecosystem in the Tramuntana mountain range.

The racoon can weigh up to six kilos and lives from between 13 and 16 years. Apart from being a carnivore, the racoon - like the coati - can feed off various food types. It is known to frequent water sources such as ponds and torrents (water courses) at night and in the early hours of the morning.
