THE Rey Jaume Fiesta has now started in Santa Ponsa and will bring music, films, dancing, competitions, fireworks and of course the traditional battles between the Moors and the Christians. The events, which will run until 11 September, commemorate the landing in Santa Ponsa of King Jaume to conquer the island in September 1229. To start things off there will be the Rei en Jaume 2005 prize award ceremony tomorrow, with a performance by the Tolo Servera Trio at the Hotel Linder in Bendinat. On Saturday the 6th a swimming event across the bay of Santa Ponsa will be celebrated, as well as a parade of giants at Plaza de la Pinada from 6pm until 8.30pm, followed by a concert by local musician Jaume Anglada, who will be presenting his latest album. Canoeists will be in their hundreds on Sunday at 10am when they take part in the 6th canoeing race around the Malgrats islands.
From the 5 until 8 September five main activities have been organised; Comedy Club, junior singing competition, commemorative acts of the 776th aniversary of the landing, fireworks and foam party. The traditional medieval market will be held from 9 until 11 September, accompanied by the main event when the Moors and Christians battle on Saturday 10 September from 5.30pm onwards.
