PALMA
OVER 250 angry Magalluf residents and business people took part in yesterday evening's tense protest calling for immediate action to be taken by Calvia Council against the growing problem of street prostitution in the holiday resort.

The protest started near the scene of last Saturday's prostitution-related clash between two British tourists and four local residents which has left a 44-year-old Yorkshireman in a critical condition in a Palma hospital. The four appeared in court yesterday and the one apparently responsible for the serious injuries the Briton suffered, was being held on remand in prison last night. Brandishing placards demanding more control and the prostitutes moved on, the protest made its way across Punta Ballena to Vaquer i Ramis where a tribute was paid to the “brilliant work” carried out by the Local Police and the Guardia Civil. However, the spotlight is on the Town Hall and Calvia Councillor for Citizen Security Bartolome Bonafe was given a noisy and frosty reception while scores of nearby residents and holiday makers shouted their support for the protest from their balconies as it moved through the resort.
