PALMA THE storms last week not only put Palma's brand new metro out of service for 24 hours, they also carried rubbish and other débris onto some of the most popular beaches in Majorca. The weekly report on the state of the beaches published by the Fomento del Turismo (Majorcan Tourism Board) and the Balearic health ministry, showed no fewer than ten beaches or stretches of beaches which were below standard.

They were the Playa de Palma to the left of the Sant Jordi channel; Playa Can Pere Antoni, opposite the GESA building; the left hand side of the Illetas beach; the part of Playa d'Albercuix in the Port of Pollensa opposite the Calle Llevant; two areas of the Playa dels Tamarells, also in the Port of Pollensa, to the left of La Gola and Calle Xarxes; the centre of the beach at Cala Egos in Santanyi; and three areas of the Arenal beach -- the end of the beach, Calle Belga and to the left of the Torrent Jueus -- all in the part belonging to Llucmajor.

The Tourism Board stresses that this situation is temporary and is a result of the storms, the beaches are expected to be back to normal this week.
However, it is bad news after a summer in which some of the island's most popular beaches such as Cala Mayor and Camp de Mar were closed because of sewage spills.

The Cala Mayor beach has now fully recovered and it was given a rating of excellent in the Board's report.
Other beaches with the top rating included Balnearios 15 and 8 in the Playa de Palma, Portals Nous, Palmanova, Magalluf, Paguera, Andratx, Formentor, Alcudia, Muro, Can Picafort, Capdepera, Son Servera, Sant Llorenç, Manacor and Ses Salines.

All the other beaches on the island were rated as “good.”
