PALMA RETAIL sales had an interannual increase of 2.3 percent in July in the Balearics, in constant terms, lower than the increase of 3.3 percent recorded at national level, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

The Balearic region also had an increase of 0.3 percent in employment in the retail sector in July, in comparison with the same month last year, lower than that recorded in the rest of the country, which was 1.6 percent.

The autonomous regions with the highest interannual increases in sales in constant terms were Extremadura (6.7 percent), Castilla La Mancha (6.3 percent), and Aragon (5.9 percent), while Catalonia with 0.8 percent, Cantabria (2.3 percent) and the Balearic Islands (2.3 percent) recorded the lowest increases in comparison with July 2006.

Sales of food products rose by one percent, while the sale of non food products increased by 4.9 percent. Among this last group, sales in the personal goods segment increased by 7.6 percent, and “other” goods recorded an increase of 4.7 percent, while sales of household goods fell by 0.7 percent.

If the “calendar effect” is eliminated (the difference in the amount of working days in a month year to year), the retail index has increased by 3.1 percent.

The general index for large stores, which is concerned with sales in stores which are more than 2'500 square metres in area, showed an increase of 0.8 percent in July at constant prices. Food products had a decrease of 3.5 percent, while sales of non food products increased by 3.1 percent. If this were corrected for the “calendar effect” the index would register an increase of 0.7 percent.

Employment in the retail sector, both salaried and non salaried, increased by 1.6 percent in July, while employment in the large stores rose by 1.7 percent. By regions, Murcia had the greatest increase in employment in this sector (5.3 percent), followed by Extremadura with 4.5 percent.
