STAFF REPORTER A 35-year-old man was seriously injured yesterday when he was knocked down on a pedestrian crossing in Avenida America in s'Arenal by a motorbike rider who was allegedly speeding.

A first analysis of the accident said that a Ford Focus car driving down the avenue had pulled up at a pedestrian crossing when he realised that a group of people were about to cross it. The walkers started to cross the road in front of the stationary car when a Yamaha TCR motorbike came riding past apparently at great speed and collided with one of the pedestrians. The victim was knocked unconscious and suffered broken arm, leg and hip bones and the motorbike rider was also slightly injured. Emergency services arrived at the scene and attended to both the seriously hurt victim and motorbike rider on the spot.

The latter however, became agitated when the police arrived and he insulted the officers. He was arrested and charged with causing grievous bodily harm through dangerous driving.
