THE Balearics has registered its second hottest summer in 38 years, surpassed only by the same period of June to August in 2003, said the National Weather Agency (AEMET) yesterday.
Official reports show that the average temperature at the observatory at Palma airport between June and August this year stood at 24.7 degrees centigrade, on Ibiza 25.3 degrees, and 24.9 degrees on Minorca.
A statement by AEMET said that at Palma airport and Sa Pobla, the average temperatures of 24.7 and 25.4 degrees respectively were the highest registered since 1971.
They have only been surpassed since that time in 2003 when average temperatures reached 26.5 and 27 degrees respectively. The weather observatory at Minorca airport registered the third highest average temperature for the last 38 years, 24.9 degrees.
It has only been surpassed in 1994 and in 2003 when the thermometer touched 27.2 degrees centigrade.
