Calvia.— “The ruling Partido Popular in Calvia is failing to control the municipality's mounting pile of waste material and it should be penalising those companies who are showing no responsibiliy in this regard,” said Rafel Sedano, a spokesman for the Majorcan Socialists and Green Party coalition yesterday.

Sedano called for the Council to take tough action against companies who let dirt and rubbish pile up on their premises thereby “preventing the area's tourist image deteriorating further.”

Sedano pointed out how some businesses located in Palmanova and Magalluf “don't even respect existing legislation so far as waste recycling and disposal of industrial material is concerned.” He said that there were some firms in Avenida Magalluf and Avenida Notari Alemany where emptied rubbish containers were left lying in the street all day.

Sedano said that the most flagrant violation of the law related to a motorcycle hire and repair premises where unwanted chassis and spare parts are left lying around at the bottom of a busy avenue, much frequented by residents and tourists.
