THE President of UNICEF in the Balearics, Maria Antonia Caimari, yesterday presented the world campaign United by Infancy. United by AIDS which is being promoted in the Balearics via the collaboration of well known people such as the writer Fernando Schwartz and a series of performances such as the concert Majorca Pop 40 which will take place on September 10 on the beach at Santa Ponsa at which 45'000 young people are expected. The campaign aims to collect 2.5 million euros in donations in Spain in the short term and a total of 12 million by 2010.
These donations will be used to finance four principal areas, the erradication of the transmission of the disease from mother to child via the distribution of retroviral medications; the prevention of the disease among young people between 14 and 25; the protection and support of children with the disease as well as pediatric treatment. Actually, only 5 percent of children with the disease have access to this treatment, and the campaign will try to increase that figure to 75 percent.
