TENS of thousands of people packed the Son Moix football stadium last night for the most eagerly awaited and spectacular musical extravaganza the Balearics has ever seen.

From the minute the gates opened at 5pm, thousands of fans of Andrea Bocelli and Sir Elton John began streaming into the stadium where the gigantic stage, one of the largest in Europe, had been erected during the week.

The setting could not have been better under the Majorcan stars when the concert started with Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli accompanied by the DIV4S sopranos, Tony and Emmy winner American Heather Headley and the Spanish soprano Saioa Hernandez.

If there are such things as greatest hits in the operatic world, Bocelli, backed by the Balearic University Choir and the Balearic Philharmonic Orchestra performed some of the very best while DIV4S, performed a song alone.

The concert included selected highlights from the opera Nabucco by Verdi; from La Boheme by Puccini and from Cavalleria Rusticana by Mascagni while the 72-strong orchestra interpreted popular classical songs such as The Nights of Cabiria, Sentimento and Viaggio Italiano.

Bocelli performed duets at various stages during the concert with both sopranos, Heather Headley and Saoia Hernandez, as well as with female vocalist group Div4's bringing the crowd to its feat on numerous occasions with rapturous applause.

And, if the rare luxury of Bocelli and his sopranos performing in Palma was not enough, Rocket Man Elton John and his band, who kicked off their European tour in Palma last night , did not disappoint his fans either.

In an interview with the Bulletin a few weeks ago, Sir Elton promised he would be playing his greatest from over the years and the crowd just went crazy as the legendary musician and performer rocked the stadium.

For the tens of thousands who attended the mega concert, it was a night to remember and one the Balearics has never ever witnessed.
Organiser Onni Nordström was extremely pleased with the massive success of the concert which he put together out of his love to the island. “I wanted to give something back to Majorca,” Nordström said in a recent interview and, judging by the success of last night's concert, he is planning bigger and better events for next year.
