PALMA
A British hiker was tragically killed and his walking companion injured when they were caught in a rock slide after getting lost while hiking near the Puig Tomir in the mountainous municipality of Escorca.

It is understood that the two men, both aged in their 60's, had rented a holiday villa near Buger and yesterday headed out to cover one of the most popular hiking routes in the Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range.

The hike begins at the Binifaldo mineral water factory in Escorca.
After parking their vehicle, they set out on foot to the Binifaldo bottling plant just over one kilometre away and from the where the climb up to the 1'104 metre summit of the Puig Tomir starts.

It appears that the two men were experienced hikers because they were well equipped. But, some 20 minutes in to their hike, at around 10.30am, disaster struck.

It appears that the two strayed off the path or lost their bearings just after passing Sa Sont des Pedregaret.
