PALMA ROSA Estaras last night resigned as President of the centre right Partido Popular (PP) Balearic opposition party. Already PP spokesman in the Balearic Parliament, Estaras took over the reins of the party when its former leader and ex-Balearic President, Jaume Matas resigned as Partido Popular President in 2007 following his party's defeat in the regional elections. She was officially elected as party President in 2008 and nominated by national PP leader, Mariano Rajoy to stand as a Euro MP for the Balearics, - a position she took up earlier this year. Despite giving up her position, Estaras said yesterday that she was still be committed to leading the party from a distance into the 2011 elections.

Having let the national PP leader, Mariano Rajoy know in advance of her decision, Estaras' resignation comes a day after a Balearic court summoned Jaume Matas to return from his home in the United States to declare his role in the building of the Palma Arena.
