THE Balearic roads claimed their 78th life of the year yesterday when a 50-year-old motorist died in an accident on the outskirts of Palma.
According to the 061 emergency service, the fatal, accident happened at 7.50am along the Palma to Manacor road under the Sant Jordi fly-over.
The exact cause of the accident has yet to be confirmed but what is clear is that the driver, who was travelling alone in the vehicle, veered off the road and crashed into a wall.

A 061 ambulance and team of a paramedics were at the scene within minutes but they were unable to save the driver's life. He was declared dead at the scene.

Despite the introduction of the new driving licences point system and tougher traffic penalties, the number of fatal accidents in the Balearics and across Spain has risen alarmingly this year.
