Palma.—Since the start of the summer, 15 people have drowned in waters off Balearic beaches or in swimming pools, regional government figures confirmed yesterday.

From the start of June to the end of August this year, 76 people had to be rescued after getting into difficulties in the water and losing consciousness; 61 of the victims were successfully resuscitated but 15 drowned. There were 26 incidents in August, 17 off beaches and 9 in swimming pools. Six people drowned.

Emergency 112 Service reported yesterday that it had responded to 904 beach incidents in the Balearic Islands this summer, 468 on Majorca, 255 on Ibiza, 133 on Minorca and 48 on Formentera.

In August alone, there were 371 calls for assistance, 188 on Majorca, 96 on Ibiza, 63 on Minorca and 24 on Formentera.
The section of the Emergency Services report referring to August alone showed that 41 incidents had been caused by boats mooring and moving within areas of water that had been set aside exclusively for swimmers, 3 boats in separate incidents had drifted out of control, 5 people had been swept out of their depth in the sea, and 26 had lost consciousness after having got into difficulties in the water. Separately, Emergency Services had responded to six incidents in which large scale contamination threatened the marine environment.
Aside from accidents at sea, there were 129 other occasions on which people needed help because of falls, fainting, cuts and bruises, too much alcohol and heart attacks.
