THE opposition yesterday criticised the President of the Council of Majorca for saying that it is not possible for the island to take any more immigrants while pursuing a policy of development which will encourage the growth of the population. However, the Partido Popular (PP) admitted that the doors cannot remain permanently open.
In the corridors of the Balearic Parliament, representatives of the PP and the opposition parties commented on the words used by Maria Antonia Munar in her Majorca Day speech yesterday, in which she said that Majorca's capacity to take immigrants was limited and the island could not take any more people. In the opinion of the Socialist Antonio Dieguez, it is a paradox that Munar made this statement when she has approved a territorial plan and supported a policy of road building which cannot do anything but bring more people to Majorca. I don't know if she expects homes to be built by robots, he said ironically, adding that while this policy is in place, it follows that more people will come to the island to work.
