STAFF REPORTER THE construction industry in the Balearic Islands has welcomed an idea put forward in the last few days by the regional Hotel Chain Federation which proposes the demolition of obsolete tourist accommodation and new hotels being built on the same site.

Manuel Gomez, Director of the Builders' Association in the Balearics said that the move for demolition and reconstruction would only be considered for buildings without any special architectural features which would otherwise catalogue them as being of special heritage interest. He confessed that his members were “taken aback” at the announcement by Hotel Chain Federation chief, Aurelo Vazquez. Gomez explained that he had no idea that any plans other than those for reform were being contemplated but said that it would, in any event, not be a straightforward matter. Local planning laws need to be considered, he said, and such major projects would probably need government backing to ensure strict adherence to the law. Were the rebuilding programme to materialise, said Gomez, it would be an excellent boost to older tourist resorts in the Islands where “quality has been eroded” over the last few years.
