A new Balearic citizen security plan is going to be drawn up with the full input from all the local institutions and police forces.
The central government representative to the Balearics, Ramon Socias, yesterday announced the creation of the Balearic Regional Council for Citizen Security, which will meet at least twice a year and will assess the situation to formulate a policy designed for the place and time. According to Socias, the new body will hold its first meeting on Tuesday September 26 and he has invited a wide range of institutions and organisations to take part. The new Council will operate in much the same way as the recently formed National Council for Citizen Security, although on a regional basis, and will be made up of the heads of the Government's Delegation, the National Police Force, the Guardia Civil and Civil Protection, the Balearic Ministry of the Interior, and the Local Police Force. Also involved will be the councils of Palma and Ibiza, being the largest places in the region, in addition to the General Judicial Council, the Chief Public Prosecutor, the Official Balearic College of Lawyers, unions and company associations on the islands, as well as residents associations, parents associations, the Youth Council and Womens' Rights groups. With reference to this last body, Socias said he considered their participation will prove vital because of their commitment to the struggle against domestic violence, one of the most worrying problems in the Balearics.
