PALMA
PALMA City Council will today be opening a quality food market in Plaça Bisbe Berenguer Palou, promoting ecologically produced fruit, vegetables, bread and cheese, Health and Environment Councillor Begoña Sanchez said yesterday.

The project is a joint venture between the Council, “Lligams” Consumer Group, the Majorcan Ecological Product Association (Apaema) and a local food marketing organisation. The market will be open every Saturday between 8am and 2pm but only those products which have been given a seal of quality by the Balearic Council for Ecology in Agriculture will be on sale to the public.

The market, confirmed Sanchez, will be officially opened tomorrow at 11am by the Mayor of Palma, Aina Calvo and Economy and Tourism director of the Council of Majorca, Isabel Maria Oliver. Sanchez declared that apart from promoting the finest food products that Majorca has to offer, the market will contribute towards “livening up” a central area of Palma which might otherwise see little activity on a Saturday morning.

Sanchez said that to have a market in Palma for ecologically produced foodstuffs means that less fuel will be used, and therefore less CO2 contamination produced.

If growers, bakers and cheesemakers can bring their wares once a week into Palma, the public will not have to travel to outlying parts of the island to buy one item and then drive off somewhere else in search of others.

The public will be invited to ecological product tastings by the stallholders and at today's inauguration, music group “Tiu” will be giving a concert at 12pm to add a special touch to the occasion. “Lligams” Consumer Group representative Jesus Frutos said yesterday that ecological products were healthier and that prices were reasonable because there is no speculation or “middlemen” involved in the buying and selling process.
