PALMA is the second worst area in Spain for car thefts and vehicle vandalism, according to a Europe-wide lifestyle survey.
The European Commission's Urban Audit - which measures the quality of life in 27 countries - revealed that Palma suffered 6.68 vehicle thefts for every 1'000 inhabitants. Only Murcia had worse figures in Spain.

Cities in Italy and the UK dominated the league table for car crime with Caserta leading the way with 15.3 vehicle thefts per 1'000 inhabitants. Manchester, Hull and Nottingham were the worst British cities.

The Urban Audit covers 321 cities in the EU plus others in Turkey, Norway and Switzerland, with populations ranging from 50'000 to 10 million. The wide-ranging survey, conducted by Eurostat, includes a whole host of data ranging from population statistics to employment details, climate and crime.

Most of the data was collected during 2004.
The survey also places Palma as one of the fastest-growing cities in Europe.
