THE Spanish hotel chain, Sol Meliá, launched an Asian Gastronomy Week yesterday as part of a special attraction in fourteen of their hotels in Spain (one in Palma) and at the Melia White House in London. Until October 9, a selection of 12 dishes will be offered native to Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia.
The presentation of the event was given yesterday in Madrid by the director of the Melia group, Joaquin Batanero. He said that the Asian menus will be produced by internal hotel staff who had undergone special training for the cuisine. Batanero explained that the Melia hotel chain has seven hotels in Asia and three specialist cooks employed there came to Madrid to teach the preparation of their national dishes. The project has been undertaken in the context of a World Gastronomy workshop designed to promote international cuisine. A Melia spokesman said the Asian food selected is very healthy as it is has a vegetable base and little fat.
