PALMA
PALMA'S 47 Infantry Regiment yesterday celebrated the changing of the Guard of Honour at Almudaina Palace.
The regiment, which was founded by Marques de Vivot in 1808 to fight in the Spanish War of Independence, celebrates the change of guard at midday of the final Saturday of every month and yesterday morning large crowds gathered outside the Cathedral to watch the 20 infantrymen in traditional costume. The regiment decided to change the guard in traditional dress in 1998 and the event has become an extremely popular custom which is now officially part of the Balearics Military Culture programme.
