THE Balearic Islands is the region of Spain with the eighth highest number of women councillors in its town halls, a government registry confirmed yesterday.

More than 35 percent of local government figures in the Balearics are women, higher than for the country as a whole but noticeably less than in the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla in North Africa where there is female representation of 44 and 40 percent respectively.

The same report showed that at a national level, there are 66'099 local councillors, 30.51 percent of whom are women. The difference is even more noticeable in statistics showing the split in Spain between males and females holding the post of Mayor. Nearly 85 percent of them are men.
