THE Balearic parliament yesterday rejected a motion put forward by the national and regional socialist group, PSIB-PSOE calling for official recognition of Republican victims in Spain's Civil War and the ensuing dictatorship. The proposition failed to secure the backing of the centre right Partido Popular (PP), currently in power in the Balearic Islands. PP spokesman Joan Huguet explained that his party felt there was no need to awaken the ghost of the Civil War and said he could see how the issue could be used as a source of confrontation between political parties. He added it was essential to move away from the enmities of the armed conflict.
