STAFF REPORTER TWO bank robberies took place almost at the same time yesterday, one at a branch of Banca March in Palma and another office of the same bank in Consell, the National Police reported.

Robbery Squad sources said that thieves in Palma escaped with 1'000 euros in cash whilst robbers in Consell snatched 350 euros.
Investigators said that at about 1pm, a rider on a yellow motorcycle parked his vehicle outside Banca March in Calle Eusebio Estada in Palma.
With his face covered by a balaclava helmet, the robber entered the bank shouting at the clients and staff: “Give me all the money, this is a hold-up!” The safe was apparently closed at the time but coins and notes in a money box, totalling 1'000 euros were handed over the counter. The robber, speaking in Castillian Spanish, demanded more cash but eventually left with what he had. He reportedly rode his motorcycle off in the direction of the Son Castelló industrial estate. The Robbery Squad received a number of calls from residents in Calle Eusebio Estada about the attack.

Just half an hour later, a man entered the branch of Banca March in the town of Consell armed with a pistol and threatened the staff and clients.
The robber fled after he was handed 350 euros in cash. The management at the bank alerted the Guardia Civil and an investigation was launched. Officers searched for footprints of the attacker inside the bank and also took the security camera video recordings to pin down information on the thief.

At the outset of their investigations, neither the National Police Robbery Squad nor the Guardia Civil believed that there was any connection between the two attacks or that the robbers had in any way planned to “coordinate” the robberies. What is noticeable, however, said a source close to the investigation is the way that the number of robberies and attempted bank robbers on Majorca are increasing.
