EMPLOYMENT of foreigners in the Balearics increased by 21.13 percent in 2006, according to the Foreign Labour Market Report produced by the Occupational Observatory on the islands, and presented by Ramon Socias, the Spanish Government's representative to the Balearics.

Both Socias, and the Regional Director of INEM (the unemployment office), Antonio Garcia Moles, described the report's findings as “consistent with a growing economy based on the economic drive of tourism”.

Garcia Moles explained that throughout 2006 the labour market on the islands had one of the highest figures for foreigners in the country, both seeking work (19.84 percent) and employed (26.69 percent), very much above the national average.

The number of foreigners seeking work registered with the Public Employment Service on the islands at December 31 2006 was 16'540, which was an increase of 21.2 percent in comparison with 2005. The greatest increase in the number of foreign job seekers was seen in the group from outside the European Union, with a 28.74 percent rise. The increase in job seekers from the European Union was 8.78 percent. In 2006, 126'648 foreigners found jobs, 26.68 percent of the total of job contracts on the islands.
