STAFF REPORTER THE Council of Minorca, anxious to avoid pillaging of an historic wreck discovered off the north coast of the island by a scuba diver, have drafted in the services of the Guardia Civil and a strategically positioned camera to protect it.

After initial investigations through means of remote controlled submersible equipment, archaeologists and technicians from the Argo Maris Foundation and Cavalleria Ecological Museum have still not been able to give a specific date to the wreck.

They suggest it may be a war ship - a frigate or galleon of the 17th or 18th centuries - but have not been able to pinpoint who built it or under which flag it was sailing.

Plenty of other research works needs to be done so the Council doesn't see fit to move any part of the wreck in the immediate future.
