THE Guardia Civil reported yesterday that they have arrested four people on charges of pickpocketing and theft from businesses in Santanyi and Cala D'Or.
Sources confirmed that each one of the detainees, all Romanians, was allotted a specific task in the robberies. One of them acted as the getaway driver who remained outside premises which were being targeted by the gang, watching for the possible presence of security forces.
The other three meanwhile, went inside the shops and whilst one of them held the interest of the staff, the others took the opportunity to snatch goods from the shelves. In order to escape with their stash of goods, the thieves put the stolen items inside their clothes or in rucksacks. Once outside, the takings were hidden in a false bottom in the boot of the car.
The gang also stole wallets from tourist in the shopping areas of Santanyi and Cala D'Or.
