Son Servera.—A spokesman for the signatories who penned the declaration in Son Servera said: “We're on the road, now, and we're not going to stop until the Manacor to Arta train line is completed.” .

The so-called “Llevant train manifesto” refers to construction work on the Manacor to Arta tram-style train which was officially declared “on hold” after the new Balearic government came to power, citing lack of finance.

But those municipalities through which the rail line runs have been left with great swathes of empty excavated territory, in some instances - such as that of Son Servera - with the whole town having been divided in two.

The ex Balearic Minister for Transport, Gabriel Vicenç recently said that the agreement which was signed between the Central and regional governments to get the new rail line built should be honoured. And so local councils of different political colours have put their in-fighting to one side in order to get the line completed.

Furthermore, said the spokesman yesterday, it is clear that the people of the Llevant region of Majorca are demanding that their public rail service be opened.

Public protest
The lobby is calling on residents in the affected areas - Manacor, Arta, Son Servera, Sant Llorenç and Capdepera - to join a protest march scheduled for 6th November, the eighth of its kind to support the rail service.

Son Servera's Mayor, Josep Barrientos said that permission has been requested from the relevant local authorities to hold the march and coaches will be laid on to ferry demonstrators to the start point.
