PALMA THE average shopping basket is increasing in price in the Balearics, due to increases of up to 15 percent in prices for basic products such as bread, eggs, meat, chicken and milk products.

This was confirmed by the President of the Shopkeepers Association Afedeco, Bartolome Servera.
Afedeco is affiliated to the Balearic Confederation of Business Associations (CAEB). “We will see the situation more clearly when these increases are reflected in the official Consumer Price Index, but we have already observed large increases in the prices of some basic food products” he said.

Afedeco represents a wide range of Balearic shops and also big distribution chains, such as Eroski-Caprabo, Hiper Centro, and the Association for the Distribution of Food and Drink.

Servera confirmed that during the first few days of October, the increase in basic food prices “has been very noticeable”, and he predicted more increases “which will depend on the amount of stock which the shops can hold”.

He also highlighted the fact that the highest increase during this time had been in the price of the different types of bread, “which has varied between 20 and 28 percent”, he said. “I am very afraid that the consumer is going to notice progressive increases in their basic foods, especially milk products, and especially during the next few months. “That is to say, we are expecting an expensive Christmas”, said the President of Afedeco.
According to the official figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the relative price increase has been 2.2 percent in July, August and September.

Nevertheless, a large increase in prices is expected during the last few months of the year. “The basic foods sector is the one which is suffering the greatest increase in prices. “This is not happening with sectors such as clothes and new technology, which are not only holding steady, in some cases they have actually fallen”, said Bartolome Servera.
