STAFF REPORTER MUSHROOM experts and enthusiasts are in luck. This year, plentiful rainfall in September and a warm early October have triggered the growth of the earliest wild mushrooms in the woods and thickets of Majorca.

Carles Constantino, mushroom expert from Soller's Balearic Natural Science Museum said yesterday that it has all the hallmarks of being a bumper season as long as “it doesn't become too warm or windy.” This year, not only will the museum be holding educational open days on species of mushrooms as it has done for the past 25 years, but it will also be hosting a national conference which is expected to attract some 50 experts from around the country.

Constantino confirmed that the wild mushrooms which are usually the first to appear on Majorca are indeed out, such as the edible varieties of blaves bones and pixa-cans. The appearance of others, he explained, will depend on whether the favourable conditions remain in place.
