FIRE fighters had to mount a complicated and dangerous mission to rescue a 48-year-old German yesterday who had got stuck half way down the cliffs in Peguera and was apparently threatening to commit suicide after an argument with his wife.

The alarm was raised when the Local Police were tipped off about the man on the cliff side just after 8am. Officers rushed to the scene and the German said he was just looking at the view but refused to return to the summit. He demanded that his wife be present and explain the telephone messages which had led him to suspect that she was having an affair.

More and more Emergency Service units began gathering at the scene including the Guardia Civil, fire fighters and the maritime rescue service.
By the time they arrived, the wife was also at the scene trying to reason with her husband and convince him to stay put while fire fighters lowered themselves down the cliff face to save him.

The rescue team, apparently found the German under the influence of alcohol.
Nevertheless, the two fire fighters managed to lower the individual to the foot of the cliff where the Local Police were waiting and, as a precaution, handcuffed him, in case he tried to escape.

He was given a medical check at the scene and given the all clear.
