Palma.—During June, July, August and September, the Balearic Emergency Services had 1'123 calls for help as a result of incidents taking place on beaches around the Islands, 101 of them due to people in difficulties in the water. Majorca registered 592 emergencies, Ibiza 314, Minorca 157 and Formentera 60.

Of the total amount of emergencies this summer, 219 took place in September.
The Report on Emergency Callouts released yesterday did not include specific incidents at sea but rather those connected with activity surrounding the beach and bathing areas. Such callouts related to theft, fights, cases of people needing medical attention, accidents of varying types, both children and adults who lost their way, animals making a nuisance of themselves and search and rescue operations.

During the four months, Emergency services dealt with 13 incidents of people who had heart attacks whilst on the beach, 31 cases of people who were missing or who had managed to lose their way, 5 people injured whilst scuba diving, 94 thefts, 33 fights, 2 search and rescue operations, 2 sightings of shoals of jellyfish and 108 complaints of a varying nature by the public.

Of the 101 people who got into difficulty in the water, 25 died, three more than last year. Of the total number of such incidents, 63 happened on Majorca, 21 of them resulting in people drowning.

In September alone in the Balearics, Emergency Services made a separate report of non-beach related incidents, including 11 boats unlawfully using bather-only areas, 3 boats running adrift, 10 people in danger out at sea, and 3 incidents of seawater contamination.
